ABOUT THE TOUR

John Gaw Meem is New Mexico’s most influential historic architect, known for his popularization of the Southwest regional style and for his historic preservation activities, who worked out of his Santa Fe office from 1924-1959. The afternoon tour of the Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm (1930-1933) highlights Meem’s elegant residential ranch style in Albuquerque’s magnificent, pastoral North Valley.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Gain an awareness of the historic importance and current utilization of significant 1930s era farm and ranch buildings and gardens designed by celebrated Santa Fe historic architect, John Gaw Meem and landscape architect, Rose Greeley.

  • The Los Poblanos tour will emphasize the physical, emotional, and social well-being of occupants in the repurposing of historic buildings to modern projects for the community and the marketplace.

  • Discuss the mindful balance between historic preservation and improving the performance of the buildings for program needs, accessibility, life-safety, energy efficiency, and building systems.

  • Learn how both public and private partnerships worked towards goals of preserving existing buildings and bringing new life and activity to the properties and the surrounding neighborhoods, enhancing the human experience, social interaction and environmental awareness.

  • Explore how design contributes to Albuquerque’s unique take on the development of public and private buildings through an appropriation of myth and motif – contributing to the invention of a regional aesthetic coincident with the rise of cross-country tourist industry by train and car.

On this walking tour, you may encounter several flights of stairs, walking on uneven surfaces, longer standing and walking periods, various terrains, long driveways, steep driveways, and unpaved areas.
