The Kaune-Bandelier House was the home of distinguished Swiss archaeologist Adolph Bandelier from 1882 to 1891 while conducting research in New Mexico and Mexico. He and his wife Josephine leased the house on East De Vargas Street, which dates from about 1867, from shoemaker John F. Schulman, who operated a shop on the Santa Fe Plaza. The Kaune family, longtime local merchants, rented and eventually purchased the house in 1919, and their descendants continued to reside in the house until 1982, when it was purchased by the Gerald Peters Gallery. Kaune came from Illinois and settled in Santa Fe for his health. Eventually, he opened a grocery store on the Santa Fe Plaza, and ran the Kaune Grocery Company for more than 30 years before his death in 1933. The Kaunes’ seven children continued the family grocery business, which remains today at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta.
