El Zaguán boasts a rich history dating back to the mid-1850s. Originally built by James L. Johnson, a Santa Fe Trail merchant, the property has evolved from a thriving family home to a beautifully restored landmark. The house, once described as "one of the finest villas on the edge of the city," now serves as the Foundation's office, exhibit area, and private apartments. The property showcases local architecture with Spanish-Pueblo and Territorial influences, possesses a charming historic garden with remnants of the Canyon Road Community Ditch, and provides versatile spaces for various event types.
The Edwin Brooks House, 553 Canyon Rd
The Edwin Brooks House, adjacent to El Zaguán, offers a unique blend of history and artistry. Extensively remodeled by William Penhallow Henderson in the 1920s, the house showcases exquisite craftsmanship, including hand-adzed wood beams, corbels, and lintels, an interior balustrade balcony, and Henderson's signature rose motif. This property later became the home and studio of renowned artist Fremont Ellis, a member of the celebrated Los Cinco Pintores group. The Edwin Brooks House has an inviting sala perfect for meetings, presentations, and intimate dinners and receptions.
