About the Artists
ROBERT KING POP-UP | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2024 | 1-4 PM
Join us to meet Robert King as he showcases his stunning wood-fired vessels. Drawing inspiration from the high desert landscape surrounding his Galisteo, NM studio, Robert crafts pottery that reflects the organic beauty of the local environment. His work is a heartfelt tribute to the land, incorporating natural materials that have rested there for centuries.
ABOUT ROBERT KING
The high desert terrain serves as both inspiration and supply chain for most of the work produced by Robert King. Robert, a physician and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is a self-taught potter who continuously seeks new ways to express himself primarily utilizing the various natural resources found in the surrounding landscape. Respectfully collaborating with the wild clay, rocks, minerals, sand, and trees surrounding his Galisteo, NM home and studio, he attempts to craft pottery that expresses the organic and natural environment where these materials have rested for many centuries. He describes his current body of work as “a love letter to the high desert”.
TREE OF LIFE POP-UP | REBECCA LEE KUNZ | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2024 | 12-4 PM
Rebecca Lee Kunz will be signing copies of Chooch Helped, a recently published picture book illustrated by Kunz and written by Andrea L Rogers. In addition to the book, Rebecca Kunz will also be showcasing graphic t-shirts featuring her artwork, cards, and more.
A solo exhibition of Kunz's new work will be on view in the gallery at El Zaguan in September 2025.
ABOUT REBECCA LEE KUNZ
The Tree of Life Studio was created in 2007 by Rebecca Lee Kunz. The Tree of Life archetype signifies the connecting of all forms of creation. From this archetype, all life is not only symbolically connected, but thrives when humans draw upon its interwoven nature. We can, at any time, take strength and courage from the earth’s generative offerings. As creativity is the very fabric in which the Tree of Life exists, it is also at the core of our human survival. It is the life force that drives us all.
Rebecca Lee Kunz (b. Norman, OK 1975) grew up in Oklahoma and is a multi-media artist and the owner of Tree of Life Studio. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation (Tulsa) and of European descent, her work draws upon tribal mythology. Rebecca earned a BFA in painting from the College of Santa Fe in 1998 and lives in the foothills of Santa Fe County with her husband and three daughters. Rebecca is a multimedia artist and illustrator working at the intersection of climate justice and cultural awareness. Within her layered surfaces, she draws upon tribal mythology and archetypal symbolism. Rebecca infuses Cherokee mythology into her work where she is in conversation with each folk tale as a living and ever-changing story. As these myths are woven into each of her pieces, they serve as hard-working and flourishing historical narratives. A visual storyteller, animist, and folklorist, she hopes to illuminate awareness about our shifting cultural climate and to inspire solutions to the social and environmental issues of today. Rebecca likes to push back against sentimental chronicles, and her goal is to spark a contemporary conversation about active myth.
