ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
Just over a year ago, I moved from El Zaguán (HSFF) in Santa Fe to the Galisteo Basin near the town of Cerrillos. The subject of my work has shifted from the historic architecture of my Canyon Road residency to my new surroundings. The views include red rocks, the Cerrillos Hills, and the Ortiz Mountains. It is an exquisite landscape, and I feel lucky to have landed here.
Recently, in the midst of the current pandemic, I have been looking for all the signs of hope and rebirth around me, from the small sprouts in my vegetable garden, to the first green of the cottonwood trees. Tracking Spring’s first golden green as it moves into deeper hues, has been my way of staying present. Both the subtlety and drama of the color and texture found in my surroundings - the desert, prairie, and mountain landscapes of northern New Mexico - have been my unending inspiration.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Anna’s painting practice has it’s roots in her early Waldorf education in New York. Regular wet into wet watercolor painting beginning in Kindergarten, with simple color palettes, were a chance to dive into color, and to express the form and beauty of the natural world. A mathematician father, who vividly described the fourth dimension over dinner, a mother who closely studied plants, older siblings all adept at sketching what they saw and imagined, a primary teacher who actively worked at honing her artistic skills, were all early influences along an artistic path that was never a question, always a given.
In 2010, Anna moved from Brooklyn NY to Northern New Mexico, where the landscape, quality of light, and rich history inspire her work. She graduated with an Associates Degree in Fine Arts, from Munson Williams Proctor Institute, and holds a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, NY. Anna has handled and helped to produce artworks, from Phillips Auction House in NYC, to Landfall Press in Santa Fe. She was a resident at El Zaguan, the Historic Santa Fe Foundation, for two years, and now resides south of Santa Fe in the Galisteo Basin.
