Nuestra Señora de Luz is a small adobe chapel built between 1880 and 1891 for the people of Cañoncito near Pecos. The chapel, altered very little since its inception, represents a time when Cañoncito was the last stop for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail before reaching Santa Fe. The tiny chapel was serviced by a visiting priest who traveled from Pecos to say Mass. Today, Nuestra Señora de Luz operates as a mission church of St. Andrew’s, the primary parish in Pecos. The National Park Service placed the Nuestra Señora de Luz Church and Cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 for its relation to the religion and culture of New Mexico and for its architectural significance.
