ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is honored to present an exhibition showcasing the captivating contemporary punch-tin artwork of New Mexico native Esteban Ismael Durán. Durán's unique artistic vision employs traditional tinwork techniques to create bold and evocative pieces that explore themes of healing, transformation, and the divine.
Durán describes his artistic process as telling stories through his hands by painting with tinwork on traditional serape canvases. He explains, "The serape background serves as a visual narrative; its horizontal formation beckons the viewer like a mirage. We imagine the desert sunset as the landscape, and the tin renderings are pronounced and bold, commanding attention. My current work exemplifies how traditional ideas, designs, and personal history can evolve into a contemporary work of art."
The exhibition showcases Durán's ability to weave personal narratives and cultural reverence into his creations. Pieces like "The Tale of the Deer Spirit" pay homage to the sacred animal through a personal ritual, while "Angels in the Sky" is a poignant tribute to his Grandma Lola's peaceful passing, symbolized by guiding birds. While some works explore ethereal themes, others incorporate earthly elements like bees, fish, and snakes alongside the mythical Jackalope, inviting conversation and inquiry.
Durán's work also incorporates the symbolism of geometric designs, representing male and female energy and emphasizing the balance of yin and yang. The inclusion of crosses underscores the four directions, bringing forth an awareness of spirit and instinctual guidance.
For Durán, the artistic process is deeply personal and meditative. "Mindfulness becomes an integral part of my creative journey. I consider each piece a one-time experience; staying present and experiencing something new is how I continue to grow as an artist."

Inspired by the vibrant art scene of his youth and mentored in the discipline of tinwork by the late Ted Arellanes, Durán has developed a distinctive artistic voice. The New Mexico Museum Foundation has acquired his work, and he has contributed to public art projects in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. A significant chapter of his career was spent in the Pacific Northwest with Michael Curry Design & Sculptural Engineering, where he contributed to creating masks and puppets for Disney's Lion King theatrical productions on Broadway and international stages. Returning to New Mexico in 2016, Durán continues to explore mixed media, design, and the innovative use of repurposed materials. He currently resides in Albuquerque's South Valley.
