HSFF is pleased to present a talk by Scott Ernst titled Technologies and Use Cases of 3D Digital Documentation on Historic Structures or ‘How to Put Granny’s House in Your Back Pocket’. The talk is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at 3pm in the sala at El Zaguán.

ABOUT THE TALK:
The twenty first century has brought a revolution to the world of historic documentation. Measurements that had previously been inaccessible, tedious, inaccurate, and extremely time consuming can now be done in minutes with a high degree of precision. Photography went from film to digital, and digital photography went from 8 megapixel to 100 megapixel. Modern computing has enabled the processing of vast data sets into completely new products. Plumb bobs, tape measures, string lines, sketch pads, tracing paper, and shovels have been overtaken by Total Stations, laser scanners, digital photography, thermal imaging, ground penetrating radar, modern photogrammetry, GPS, and drones. There is a whole new tool kit for historic documentation out there, and it is remarkably powerful, visually compelling, fast, and accurate. This talk will discuss some of the modern technologies that are being used in the documentation of historic structures, why they might be used, as well as some of the limitations and advantages of each. (Don’t panic, we won’t get too techie on you.)
